Human beings have a natural desire to care for one another. When they hear about people who don’t have access to health care, it naturally upsets them. I understand this, I feel the same way. But, the fact is, there are already systems in place to take care of those who cannot afford medical care in the US (such as Medicare and Medicaid).
It’s a definite possibility that Barack Oboma may be elected president. If he is, I feel it is a virtual certainty that universal health care will be enacted. This is especially the case if the democrats control congress. So, we can look forward to the fine system that the Veterans of this country enjoy as well as those who are on Medicare and Medicaid. It will be incremental though, so I’ll be safe for awhile. If it comes to the point that the health care system is completely a product of the government, then I will opt out. I’ll drop my license as a psychologists, and become something else. I have no interest in participating in a socialist system. I don’t feel I can be an effective ’shrink’ in that kind of system.
Now, I’ll continue to offer discounts and occasional pro-bono work, but I will not be a part of socialism. That is something that this country has fought against since its inception…at least folk who value ‘rugged indvidualism,’ which this country was founded upon have fought against it. I’ve seen how socialized medicine works, and it is not well. To psychology’s credit it actually seems to work a bit better than medicine in the VA system, but it is still horribly ineffecient and ineffective for a lot of folk.
So, I still believe in this country, and believe in people who will find their way around the absurdity that is the government.
